About the Program
Welcome aboard the New England Puppet Intensive—15 days of vigorous training in the creative art of puppetry and animated object performance presented by members of The Old Trout Puppet Workshop.

Instruction and exercises will focus on physical awareness, character development, ensemble building & puppet design. In addition, participants will work toward the development of original material where our ideas and creations will take flight in front of an audience presented at the end of the workshop at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA).

The New England Puppet Intensive aims to create an environment which fosters colloquy, experimentation, and collaborative development—framework which we believe promotes truly inspired work. We will work in sessions starting at 9am and going well into the evening most nights, usually 9pm. Breaks for lunch, dinner and snacks will be scheduled throughout the day. Participants can work independently on puppet building during downtime and after the last session of the day.

Our home base for the workshop will be the beautiful campus at Buxton School in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The fields and facilities there will allow us to work indoors and outdoors, bringing our creative laboratory into the natural surroundings of this hillside playground. We’ll be able to explore how wind, sunshine, and trees may be incorporated into story telling and even aid in the manipulation and design of our puppets. Several blocks of time will be designated as "time-off/artist-dates" when participants may choose to explore some of the surrounding arts and culture venues in the area including Mass MoCA, The Clark, Tanglewood and the Willimington Flea Market.
